Learn Gurmukhi: The Script Behind Punjabi Language
A beginner's guide to the Gurmukhi alphabet — its history, structure, and how to start reading Punjabi in its native script.
If you want to read Punjabi as it is written in India, you need to learn Gurmukhi. The name itself tells you its origin: Gurmukhi means "from the mouth of the Guru." It is a script deeply tied to Sikh history, Punjabi identity, and one of the world's great literary traditions.
A Brief History
Gurmukhi was standardized by Guru Angad Dev Ji, the second Sikh Guru, in the 16th century. While the script's characters existed in earlier forms, Guru Angad Dev Ji organized and formalized them to make Sikh scripture accessible to ordinary people. The Guru Granth Sahib, the central religious text of Sikhism, is written entirely in Gurmukhi.
This means learning Gurmukhi does not just unlock a modern language — it connects you to over 500 years of spiritual and literary heritage.
The Structure of Gurmukhi
Gurmukhi is an abugida, meaning each consonant carries an inherent vowel sound (the short "a") unless modified by a vowel sign. Here is how the alphabet breaks down:
Vowel Carriers (Ura, Aira, Iri)
| Character | Name | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| ੳ | Ura | Carries vowel signs for oo/au sounds |
| ਅ | Aira | Carries vowel signs for a/aa/ae sounds |
| ੲ | Iri | Carries vowel signs for ee/e sounds |
These three characters do not represent consonant sounds. Instead, they serve as bases to which independent vowel signs attach at the beginning of words.
The 35 Letters
The full Gurmukhi alphabet consists of 35 letters: the 3 vowel carriers listed above plus 32 consonants. The consonants are traditionally arranged in rows based on where in the mouth they are articulated:
- Velars (back of throat): ਕ ਖ ਗ ਘ ਙ
- Palatals (hard palate): ਚ ਛ ਜ ਝ ਞ
- Retroflexes (curled tongue): ਟ ਠ ਡ ਢ ਣ
- Dentals (teeth): ਤ ਥ ਦ ਧ ਨ
- Labials (lips): ਪ ਫ ਬ ਭ ਮ
- Additional: ਯ ਰ ਲ ਵ ੜ ਸ ਹ
The 10 Vowel Signs (Laga Matra)
Vowel signs modify consonants to change their inherent "a" sound. For example:
| Vowel Sign | Name | Sound | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| ਾ | Kannaa | aa | ਕਾ (kaa) |
| ਿ | Sihari | i | ਕਿ (ki) |
| ੀ | Bihari | ee | ਕੀ (kee) |
| ੁ | Aunkar | u | ਕੁ (ku) |
| ੂ | Dulainkar | oo | ਕੂ (koo) |
| ੇ | Lavan | e | ਕੇ (ke) |
| ੈ | Dulavan | ai | ਕੈ (kai) |
| ੋ | Horaa | o | ਕੋ (ko) |
| ੌ | Kanauraa | au | ਕੌ (kau) |
| ੰ | Tippee | nasal n | ਕੰ (kan) |
Gurmukhi vs. Shahmukhi
Punjabi is unique among major world languages in that it is written in two completely different scripts depending on the country:
| Gurmukhi | Shahmukhi | |
|---|---|---|
| Used in | Indian Punjab | Pakistani Punjab |
| Script family | Indic (Brahmic) | Perso-Arabic |
| Direction | Left to right | Right to left |
| Primary context | Sikh texts, Indian Punjabi media | Urdu-influenced Punjabi, Pakistani media |
The spoken language is largely the same, but the writing systems are entirely different. Learning Gurmukhi gives you access to Indian Punjabi literature, Sikh scripture, and signage throughout Punjab, India.
Tips for Memorizing Gurmukhi
- Learn the five rows of consonants first. The velars-to-labials structure mirrors how sounds are produced in your mouth. This phonetic logic makes the order easier to remember than it looks.
- Practice vowel signs with one consonant. Pick ਕ (ka) and write all ten vowel combinations. Then move to the next consonant.
- Read Gurbani (Sikh hymns) slowly. Even if you do not understand the meaning yet, sounding out the text builds fluency with the script.
- Write daily. Spend five minutes a day copying Gurmukhi text by hand. The physical act of writing accelerates character recognition.
- Use flashcards with audio. Connecting the visual shape to its sound is critical, and audio reinforcement makes it stick.
